Miles or Months?

Before I spend money on new ones, how many miles or how many months until you should replace walking shoes? I just got my current pair in September or October and they are already looking worn.

Not sure about walking shoes, but I replace my running shoes every 300 miles.

According to this post,
http://walking.about.com/od/shoechoice/a/shoemyths.htm
you should replace your walking/running shoes every 500 miles. The author suggests purchasing two pairs at the same time, and then wearing the first pair for 6 weeks before you start alternating the shoes - that way you will be able to tell by feel when the first pair wears out.
